New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
